The video below - realized by Famiglie Arcobaleno, CondividiLove and Arcigay with the support of ILGA Europe - was made to help raise awareness for the proposed law on civil unions.
The creators of the video brought together kids from different backgrounds and asked them to draw their families. The pictures they drew were then shown to passers-by to measure their reactions. The result? No one had anything to protest - no one manifested rejection. Said one, "I see no difference. I still see a family."
The aim of the video (and of its accompanying website, which provides FAQs on same-sex unions) is to raise awareness of the importance of the proposed law on civil unions for same-sex couples, which is to be discussed by the Italian Senate in January 2016.
Children know what a family is
The proposed law is far from perfect, as it still does not recognize equal rights to same-sex families, but it still represents an important first step. As one of the most fundamental points of the proposed law - the part about stepchild adoptions, which allows same-sex couples to assert parental rights - is under heavy attack, the campaign highlights the urgency of taking into due account the needs and wishes of children.
Children know what a family is, and to recognize it we need a drawing.
What better way to wish each and every family happy holidays, with the hope that the New Year can be happier and fairer for all of us?
