In Italy, abortion is legal during the first three months of pregnancy. At least, that is what the law says. But things are very different in practice.
Doctors employed in public hospitals have the right to refuse to perform abortions on moral grounds ("conscientious objection"). On average, 70 percent of Italian doctors are objectors - 90 percent in some rural areas - making safe and legal abortions almost impossible for Italian women. It's an issue that raises concern at the UN Human Rights Committee, which put access to abortion on its list of issues regarding Italy.
