Education, housing, employment, crime prevention — these are the priorities identified by the deputy mayor of Vilnius in the planning of the new Roma integration program. There are 2,100 Roma in Lithuania, with 500 living in the Vilnius Roma settlement, which is more of a slum than a residential district. The previous mayor of Vilnius used punitive actions and the demolition of illegal buildings in the Roma settlement to win popularity — however, the newly elected authorities consider this approach to be "inhuman" and are currently forming a municipal commission to tackle Roma problems.
