In base alla nuova proposta dell'Home Office per il post-Brexit, i 3 milioni di cittadini UE che vivono nel Regno Unito dovranno richiedere una carta d'identità con "status civile" per poter restare a lavorare nel paese. La proposta, contenuta in un documento di 15 pagine, prevede un sistema di richiesta online "light touch" per ottenere un "permesso a tempo indeterminato" come nel caso di molti altri cittadini extra-UE che vivono in UK da almeno 5 anni. Il nuovo documento di "status civile" sarà sostanzialmente una carta d'identità rilasciata da un database centralizzato dell'Home Office.
