Mentre i negoziati sul Trattato Transatlantico (TTIP) continuano in maniera poco trasparente, la Municipalità di Saint-Gilles, una delle 19 di Bruxelles, ha deciso di esprimere simbolicamente la sua opposizione al trattato e alle sue prevedibili conseguenze sociali, economiche ed ambientali, dichiarandosi "zona fuori dal TTIP." Altre città in Belgio e Francia hanno intrapreso la stessa iniziativa. Se altri comuni facessero lo stesso, questo potrebbe avere un impatto nel momento in cui il trattato sarà discusso dai parlamenti nazionali.
