Quasi un terzo dei ricorsi relativi ai casi chiusi dall'Ombudsman europeo nel 2016 hanno riguardato la trasparenza, lo ha detto la garante nel suo rapporto annuale, pubblicato il 24 maggio. Lo scorso anno sono state chiuse 86 inchieste sulla trasparenza, in particolare in tema di accesso ai documenti. L'istituzione UE su cui la garante ha aperto la maggior parte di indagini è la Commissione Europea, con 144 casi. L'Ombudsman europeo Emily O'Reilly ha detto in conferenza stampa che la Commissione è in cima alla lista per via del "ruolo istituzionale che gioca in seno all'Unione Europea".
