Il 30 dicembre il vice primo ministro Meglena Kuneva ha annunciato che da marzo le forze armate bulgare svolgeranno pattugliamenti congiunti con il Ministero degli Interni. La richiesta proviene dal ministro degli Interni Veselin Vuchkov, per il quale non c'è motivo per cui l'esercito non possa aiutare la polizia di frontiera a gestire la crescente migrazione verso la Bulgaria. Secondo il ministro della Difesa Nikolay Nenchev non ci sono ostacoli giuridici al coinvolgimento diretto delle unità militari alle frontiere. Secondo la legge, questo compito spetta al Ministero degli Interni.
