Economista di formazione, è stato inviato della Germania all'ONU fino alla sua nomina all'UNHCR. Ha dichiarato all'agenzia stampa DPA che l'UNHCR ha aumentato le speranze per l'affermazione dei diritti umani fin dalla sua istituzione nel 2006, ma molta strada resta ancora da fare.
"Raccomando un maggior coinvolgimento della società civile nel lavoro dell'ente e la promozione di una cultura che non dia spazio all'intimidazione o alle minacce contro la società civile."
