Rumuński politycy długi zaprzeczali istnieniu tzw. “tajnych więzień CIA”. Jak twierdzi Der Spiegel, Iliescu jest “drugą głową państwa, po byłym prezydencie Polski Aleksandrze Kwaśniewskim, który potwierdził istnienie takich więzień”. Obywatel Arabii Saudyjskiej wniósł skargę do Europejskiego Trybunału Praw Człowieka przeciwko Rumunii i Polsce, twierdząc, że był torturowany w tajnych więzieniach w tych krajach w latach 2003-2006.
